Instructions

  1. Select the Unit Model. Refrigerant is determined automatically.
  2. Enter Unit Rated Full Capacity, Tons Per Circuit, and Tons Per Compressor.
  3. Enter Horizontal and Vertical Lengths for both the Suction and Liquid Line.
  4. Enter the number of risers (suction) and elbows required for each line.
  5. If applicable, enter equivalent feet for additional liquid-line components such as TXV, Solenoid Valve, or Filter Drier.
Notes: See the Total Equivalent Example tab for determining Total Equivalent Feet for each line. Maximum single riser suction-line rise of 40 ft is recommended. Reference: 2022 ASHRAE Handbook—Refrigeration.

When To Count a Riser

There needs to be a riser for every vertical run that the liquid will be traveling up — and at least one riser for every 20 feet in a single vertical run.

When a Riser Is Not Needed

You don't need a riser when the suction line is going down from the evaporator.

Elbows in Risers

Elbows that are part of a riser (suction trap) are already included in the Riser Equivalent — do NOT add them to the "Number of Elbows" section.

Single Riser Limit

Maximum single riser suction-line rise of 40 ft is recommended. Beyond this, consider a double riser configuration.
